Saijoji temple & cedar trees

Built at the foot of the outer rim of a Mt. Hakone's volcanic crater, is an old historic temple of the Soto sect of Zen Buddhism with a history over 600 years, that is popularly known as "Doryo-san”. Seen along the approach to and grounds of the temple are huge cedar trees more than 500 years old, and this grove of cedar trees has been designated as a prefectural natural monument. Along the cedar-lined approach to the temple, there are stone lanterns which are arranged to represent the twenty-eight solar stages. The stone lanterns were donated by an Odawara religious association, and the stone used is from the Hakone volcanic mountain.
