小田原城は箱根火山の山麓末端につくられています。付近の地層は箱根火山の約6万6000年前の大規模噴火（箱根東京テフラ(※１））に伴う火砕流堆積物(※２）及びそれを覆う関東ローム層(※３）です。小田原用水は箱根板橋付近から早川の水を引いたものです。用水のルートは、小田原市内の沖積低地(※４）の自然の勾配を巧みに利用したものと推定されます。板橋の取水口から小田原城下を通り、浜町の江戸口見附で城外に流れ出ていた用水で、戦国時代の終わり頃には既に存在していたことが判明しています。江戸時代も利用され続け、東海道の道の中央を流れ、家々に生活用水として分水されています。小田原用水は現在も流れ続けており、取水した水は小田原城のお堀に流れ込んでいます。
※１ テフラ：広い意味での火山灰のこと。学術用語では、火山灰は2㎜以下の粒子のものをいうが、テフラは大きさに関係なく使用する。その点で火砕物、火山砕屑物と同じであるが、広い範囲に降ったものを指すことが多い。「箱根東京テフラ」とは箱根起源で東京にも降った火山灰というような意味。
※２ 火砕流：火山噴火で生じた噴煙で、大気中を上昇せずに地表に沿って流れるもの。高温、高速の火砕物と火山ガスが混ざった流れを指すことが多い。
※３ ローム層：火山灰などが陸上で、土壌化しながら長い年かけて積もってできた地層。
※４ 沖積低地：約1万年前以降の川や海の堆積物でできた低地。小田原の沖積低地は西側から東側に向かって低くなる傾向があることから、早川の影響が強いと考えられる。
Odawara-jo Castle was built by the Omori clan in the 15th century. Later, Hojo Soun (also called Ise Sozui) moved into the castle and controlled the region for about 5 generations, or about 100 years. At that time, the castle had dry moats and earth wall fortifications made of Kanto loam layers（※１）.
During the Edo period (17th century), Odawara-jo Castle was restored as a modern castle; stone walls were constructed of andesite(※２） from the Hakone volcanoes, and the moat was filled with water.
The Odawara irrigation channels (built in the 16th century) brought water to the castle from the Hakone-Itabashi intake on the Hayakawa River at the town of Odawara. The route of the irrigation channels is thought to have been decided by the natural slopes of the Odawara alluvial plains. Water from these irrigation channels still flows into the moat of the Castle.
※１ loam layers:A layer which has been formed by volcanic ash accumulated in long years and became solidfied soil on the land.
※２ andsite:One of volcanic rocks. Silicon dioxide(SiO2) in this rock is medium quantity which is 53 to 62 % in weight.And this contains relatively little potassium and sodium. *patassium=karium *sodium=natrium
※３alluvial plains（alluvial low land):Low land formed out of deposits from river or sea within ten thousand years time.Odawara alluvial low land becomes lower from west to east which is considered to be caused by Hayakawa river.
